Rome Industries manufactures the greatest variety of pie irons. In addition to the standard square and round pie irons, they also produce a double-wide pie iron along with a bread maker, waffle iron, hamburger griller, double hamburger griller, a brat & dog cooker, a panini press-- you get the idea.
All of Rome's products are made of cast iron and come unseasoned. Seasoning is not difficult, but it does require about 2 hours to complete the process. Seasoning cast iron is something that can be done over an open fire or grill while camping, but is easier when done over a gas bbq grill in the backyard. This means plan ahead if you want to buy a new pie iron and season it before you head to the campground.
A great design of Rome Pie Irons is the use of an interlocking hinge instead of a permanently joined pin hinge. The benefit of the Rome interlocking hinge is that the two pieces of the clamshell can be taken apart. This makes sandwich assembly as well as cleanup easier because you don’t have to deal with a wide wingspan.
Another benefit to the Rome Pie Iron is the size of the head. It is larger than many other brands and allows for an entire slice of standard sandwich bread to fit inside each side of the clamshell. It also means you’ll be making a full-size sandwich! Other manufacturers have a smaller head or an oblong shape. The concave is also deeper than most which allows you to pile high and make a thick sandwich. Perfect for getting all the ingredients of a Cubano sandwich inside.
Rome pie irons have long handles to keep a safe and comfortable distance from the fire. Each unit is between 28 and 30 inches long, depending on which head is attached. The handle is securely attached to the head with a metal pin.
Rome is a wholesale only company, so they do not sell directly to consumers. However, their products can be found in sporting goods stores across the country including at Dick's, Dunham's, Gander, Cabela's, and more. The models range in price from $15 to $30.
