Toas-Tite has one of the more interesting stories in the history of the pudgy pie world. First produced for the post-war kitchens of America, the Toas-Tite was a favorite for feeding the children or entertaining at a party. After being introduced in 1945, a few years it disappeared.

Enter a pair of sisters from Chicago who fondly remembered eating grilled cheese as children made in a Toas-Tite. When they found one at a roadside stand, let's just say life would have been better if there would have been two. They did some research and discovered there was a cult following for the Toas-Tite and decided to cash in on nostalgia and bring it back to market.

They reverse engineered the Toas-Tite, making some improvements along the way, and in 2011 they reintroduced the “new” Toas-Tite at a street fair in New York City.

They make the original Toas-Tite which has a short 16-inch handle designed for stove top use. They also now make the Toas-Tite XL, with a 22" handle for use in the fireplace, firepit or campfire.

The Toas-Tite is made from cast aluminum, not cast iron, so it is an excellent light weight option for backpackers. The XL has a long-enough, but not too long, of a handle making it convenient for use in the campfire and will also fit in the pack. The short handle is great for stove-top use but most will find themselves uncomfortably close if using it over a campfire.

The Toas-Tite is made in the United States of cast aluminum with steel rods and hardwood handles. It has a heavy-duty hinge keeping the two sides pinned together.

At $29.99, the Toas-Tite is on the high end of pie irons. It is however a quality made item and one of the few pie irons available that is produced entirely in the United States.
